Why do door handles always seem to be chrome? Especially when there is nothing matching the material in any of the model lineup.
Why are colorful seatbelts a premium sports car option? It seems like small cars such as the Spark and Mirage would have these.
Also, is there a way we can lux-up the cheap plastic buckle part (whatever it’s called)? Do they have to be that red color? I assume it’s all laws, but the plastic surrounds must be changeable.
Why do we still get chromed out B pillars on comfort or luxury-focused sedans? Especially when the rear 3/4 window is too small to chrome! The Cayenne did this like a decade ago. We worked so hard switching body colored B-pillars to blacked out pillars over the last 7 years. Black all the pillars is the future.
Just curious Oppo.

The law says they have to be red.

Model S has the seat belt thing colored black.

Easier to see in low light against a non-reflective plastic/leather door.

The last Sentra SE-R Spec Vs had red seat belts:

On the Chrome handle; It has to be made of something that will stand up to repeated contact with skin oil + the force of a human hand. It has to last. Remember all those older cars you were in that originally came with plastic door handles that were basically disintegrated by the time you came up to it? They’d still be there if the whole assembly was metal.

I’ll get back to you as soon as I read through this: https://www.law.cornell.edu/cfr/text/49/57…
That’s my assumption as well, though it may be just customary due to supplying everyone in the world as opposed to a specific law.

Thank you! I knew there was a current car that disproved the “it’s a law” answer. Couldn’t remember if I imagined it.

But now all premium vehicles have some type of lighting there. The segments where matching materials is a bug deal. Must be aluminium at that point.

Makes so much sense to me. Seems like all the funky, sporty youth vehicles would do this.

I’m amazed that 100k mile door handle wear means more to people than all the aluminium body work. You cant even press down on most car hoods now. Everyone will pay $2,000 for three differentials, but hate a $200 dollar repair.

They’ll be something bigger and bolder by the second and third owners.

If you think about it, the door handle is one of the most touched parts of a car. Also, most people don’t think that something as simple as a door handle should fail. They accept mechanical failure as more reasonable.

I think the metal look is supposed to look more premium. Have you ever been in a car with black plastic handles? They feel cheap and look like crap.
On the belt buckle part, you posted a pic of the car that luxes up the buckle!
I couldn’t find a decent picture, but the buckle extends and illuminates when the door is opened, then retracts when you buckle it.

On the first point:
Door handles are chromed because “Pull the shiny thing” is still the best way to help a vapid human exit a vehicle.

Volvo has done a great job of making chrome door handles seem more natural in their later models by connecting it to a sweeping chrome piece to accentuate the door controls...

Saab argues that chrome window trim can be both quirky and elegant.

I think it’s just tradition, from back when door handles were metal.
or,,,When plastic was deemed a worthy and cheaper replacement, cheap cars had colored ones with no ornamentation. Chrome is premium.

I find that those “chrome” door handles are plastic more often than not. The idiocy of putting fake materials on a goddam touch surface defies belief
